U.S. Government To Designate Russia’s Wagner Group As Criminal Entity

Estimated 50,000 Wagner personnel deployed to Ukraine

  • The U.S. government is planning to designate the Wagner Group, a Russian private military group, as a transnational criminal entity.
  • In December, the Wagner Group was designated as a military end user by the Department of Commerce, which prevents the mercenary group from procuring equipment based on U.S. technology from anywhere in the world.
  • Describing Wagner’s involvement in the Ukraine war, National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby said that the mercenary forces are committing “atrocities and human rights abuses” as President Vladimir Putin “increasingly” turns to the enterprise’s services to boost its military prowess.
