U.S. Navy Sends Warship Through Taiwan Strait

U.S. 7th Fleet says transit was routine

  • In the first reported transit since China’s encirclement exercise around Taiwan, a United States Navy warship sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday.
  • Last week, China conducted large-scale air and sea drills in the strait in response to Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen meeting with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy earlier in April. 
  • The drills, which simulated an encirclement of Taiwan, were aimed at warning pro-independence politicians on the island and their foreign supporters.
