U.S. Students Know Less About American History

The Department of Education reported on Wednesday that only 13% of U.S. eighth-grade students meet the proficiency standards for U.S. history and civics.

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) data released shows that the progress made in the 1990s on these topics has almost entirely disappeared between 2018 and 2022.

On a 0-500 scale, the test found that eighth-graders scored an average of 258 in U.S. history, which is five points lower than the average score in 2018.
