CDC Says U.S. Suicides Up In 2021, Erasing 2 Years Of Progress

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the U.S. suicide rate and total number of suicides rose 4% in 2021.
  • That runs counter to two previous years of declines – perhaps signaling the deterioration of Americans’ mental health during the pandemic.
  • There were 47,646 deaths by suicide in the U.S. in 2021, 1,667 more than in 2020.
  • The greatest increase in suicides was among males ages 15 to 24 – an 8% rise in 2021.
