UAW Complains Over Tim Scott’s Claims That Striking Workers Should Be Fired

  • United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain has taken action by filing a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board against Senator Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina.
  • Senator Scott’s remarks came in the wake of a historic strike led by thousands of United Auto Worker members who were demanding a pay increase, a shorter workweek, the reinstatement of a pension plan, and other concessions from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis.
  • When questioned about the ongoing strike during the campaign event on Monday, Senator Scott invoked the example set by former President Ronald Reagan when dealing with federal employees who had gone on strike. He stated, “I think Ronald Reagan gave us a great example when federal employees decided they were going to strike. He said, ‘You strike, you’re fired.’ It’s a simple concept to me, and to the extent that we can use that once again.”
