- Jimmy Patronis, Florida’s chief financial officer and fire marshal, said state and local officials have been dealing with an unexpected problem in the wake of Hurricane Ian: Waterlogged electric vehicle batteries have been catching fire.
- Patronis said that in recent days firefighters have battled a number of fires caused by EV batteries.
- Patronis tweeted: “There’s a ton of EVs disabled from Ian. As those batteries corrode, fires start. That’s a new challenge that our firefighters haven’t faced before. At least on this kind of scale.”
