Whitmer Defends Use Of Platform As Other Governors Impose Ban

  • Michigan Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Sunday defended her official use of TikTok as a “communication tool,” as Republican governors and at least one fellow Democrat governor ban the use of the app on government-issued phone and other electronic devices over concerns about its Beijing-based owner’s ties to the Chinese Communist Party
  • “We have it on one device that has no access to anything else because so many people get their information that way,” Whitmer told CNN. “Whether we like it or not, that is a tool for disseminating important information. And that’s how we use it.”
  • The app was banned from congressional lawmakers’ phones because over security and privacy concerns. And New Jersey Democrat Gov. Phil Murphy has banned it on state-issued devices.
  • Whitmer on Sunday focused her concerns, and least in part, on social media users, particularly children spending too much time on platforms and then getting dragged “down rabbit holes” with it.
