World’s Oldest Tortoise Celebrates 190th Birthday

Jonathan is estimated to have been born in 1832

  • Jonathan, the world’s oldest tortoise, marked his 190th birthday with a three-day birthday party at his home in St. Helena.
  • He has lived on the South Atlantic island and British overseas territory since the late 1800s and currently enjoys the company of three giant tortoises named David, Emma, and Fred.
  • Jonathan has lived through two world wars, 40 U.S. presidents, and eight British monarchs.
