- Last week, an FBI internal memorandum dated Jan. 23, was published by Undercover DC, an investigative journalism organization.
- The memo mentioned Virginia Catholics, specifically traditional Catholics, some of whom are not in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, according to information from the Catholic Diocese of Richmond.
- The attorneys generals’ seven-page letter of complaint was addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray.
- The letter states the FBI memo “identifies ‘radical-traditionalist Catholics’ as a potential ‘racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists.’ … Among those beliefs which distinguish the bad Catholics from the good ones are a preference for ‘the Traditional Latin Mass and pre-Vatican II teachings,’ and adherence to traditional Catholic teachings on sex and marriage (which the memorandum describes as ‘anti-LGBTQ’).”

The memo was from the the FBI’s Richmond field office, and FBI headquarters has since said it has removed the document from its systems because it did not meet the “exacting standards” of the agency.
