- Active duty military suicides totaled 519 for 2021, a slight decline from 582 in 2020.
- “There is an increasing trend for all services between 2011 and 2021,” said Liz Clark, director of the DOD Suicide Prevention Office. “In the short term, the Army rate [of suicides] was similar to last year, and there was a decrease with the Navy, the Marine Corps and the Air Force. The Air Force was the only statistically significant decrease.”
- Of the active service members who died by suicide, the majority were young men.
