Energy Chief Who Called For Slash In Oil Investments Changes Tune

International Energy Agency executive director calls OPEC+ cuts ‘really unfortunate’

  • Fatih Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) and a prominent critic of oil and gas investments, recently changed his tune when discussing the current “global energy crisis.”
  • When discussing the OPEC+ decision to cut oil production, he told Reuters, “[It is] especially risky as several economies around the world are on the brink of a recession, if that we are talking about the global recession.”
  • “I found this decision really unfortunate,” Birol added.
  • As part of a proposal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, a recommendation by the IEA nearly a year and a half ago advised against the construction of new oil or gas facilities worldwide.
