Judge Allows Richmond To Remove Last Confederate Statue

The statue of Ambrose P. Hill can be removed following a Virginia circuit court ruling giving the city the authority.

  • The statue has stood over his Hill’s remains 1892.
  • The effort to remove Confederate-era statues and similar memorials in Richmond and elsewhere across the country following the 2020 death of George Floyd, a black male who died in Minneapolis police custody.
  • Eleven Confederate statues in Richmond have since been disassembled or pulled down by protesters.
  • The removal of Hill’s statue was stalled because it’s also his grave site.
  • Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney appears to indicate the Hill statue will be moved, citing in part a traffic improvement and saying, “This is the last stand for the Lost Cause in our city.”
