Kristina Karamo Beats Trump-Backed Candidate To Lead Michigan GOP Party

Karamo, who lost her 2022 secretary of state, won the post Saturday after three rounds of balloting over 11 hours.

  • Karamo lost her secretary of state race by 14 percentage points but refused to concede.
  • The state party’s grassroots faction favored Karamo but its establishment was concerned about her politics being too divisive.
  • Karamo defeated former attorney general candidate Matt DePerno, 58-42%, DePerno, who was  endorsed by former President Trump.
  • “We’re looking forward to a party that’s successful,” Karamo told the The Detroit News after her win. “We look forward to having a Republican Party that shows Michiganders that we’re here to serve. We’re good neighbors and we’re going to be winning elections again.”
