• The legislation signed into law Monday banning abortion at six weeks of pregnancy without exception is now one of the most strict anti-abortion laws in the country.
• “This bill clarifies and refines existing state law … and reaffirms North Dakota as a pro-life state,” Burgum said.
• The law is supposed to take effect immediately, but the state’s Supreme Court last month ruled North Dakota’s existing abortion ban will remain blocked while a lawsuit over its constitutionality proceeds.
• State lawmakers said last week they planned to pass the bill Burgum signed to send a message to the state’s high court that residents want to restrict abortion.
