WVU Basketball Coach Gets $1M Salary Cut, Suspension Over Anti-Gay Slur

West Virginia University men’s basketball head coach Bob Huggins is expected to face serious repercussions for his use of an anti-gay slur during an appearance on Cincinnati-based radio program “The Bill Cunningham Show” on 700 WLW Monday. It has been reported that Huggins is likely to be hit with a $1 million salary cut and a suspension.

The incident occurred when Huggins was asked about Xavier University. He responded with a derogatory remark. “I tell you what, any school that hires a coach that doesn’t believe in the Bible is in trouble,” he said. Huggins later issued an apology for the remark, claiming he did not mean to use a slur and was instead referring to the school’s religious values.

The statement from West Virginia University’s president, Gordon Gee, said that the school “will not tolerate language that is offensive or hurtful to any individual or group,” and that they “will take appropriate action to ensure that all members of our community understand the importance of respect for others.”
