• According to a new report from the Los Angeles Times, hate crimes in 2021 in Los Angeles surged 23% to their highest rates in twenty years.
• The L.A. County Commission on Human Relations reported 786 hate crime victims in 2021, the majority of which were Blacks, Hispanics, LGBTQ people, and Jewish people targeted by violence.
• The increase in hate crimes comes in the wake of then-Mayor Eric Garcetti’s vow to cut the police budget by $150 million at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests.
