- New York City bills itself as a “sanctuary city” for migrants who illegally entered the country. There’s one problem: Not many NYC officials actually want to provide sanctuary for migrants.
- The latest example: Mayor Eric Adams had planned to place a tent city for migrants in Orchard Beach, which is in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s 14th Congressional District.
- One might think this would be a perfect opportunity for AOC to display her compassion for migrants. But instead, she joined with other Bronx officials whose message to Adams was: Not in my backyard.
- So Adams is “pivoting and shifting,” perhaps moving the tent city to Queens or some other outer borough.
