Apparent Cuban Asylum Seeker Lands Russian Jet At Miami Airport

  • A Cuban pilot who apparently is seeking asylum landed a single-engine Russian aircraft at a small training airport close to Everglades National Park in Florida.
  • The pilot, identified as Rubén Martinez, flew the jet from Santi Spíritus in Cuba.
  • U.S. officials are trying to determine how Martinez was able to fly the Antonov AN-2 (Colt) jet from Cuba, fly the plane to Florida and avoid U.S. air-traffic controls and security protocols.
