Winter storms have left a trail of death and destruction as conditions continue to grip the U.S. in a vicious icy embrace.

The arctic weather has led to treacherous roadways resulting in dozens of fatalities in the country this month alone.

States as far south as Florida, which rarely experiences such weather, have been badly affected.

As the numbing cold poses serious risks like black ice, frostbite, and hypothermia, 69 lives have been lost in the U.S. this January, many involving hypothermia or road accidents.

Warmer temperatures are predicted for later this week.
