National Security Council Senior Director for Transborder Issues Katie Tobin will leave the White House amid mounting criticism of the administration’s border security policies.

Tobin has held the post for roughly three years and plans to return to Chicago to spend time with family, The Hill reported, citing White House foreign policy spokesman John Kirby.

“We’re all going to miss her. She’s a great professional and has been a true public servant in that regard,” he said.

The White House and Democrat-led Senate are currently in a standoff with House Republicans over negotiations to link border security reform to foreign aid to Ukraine. The administration has attracted considerable scrutiny in recent months for its handling of an unprecedented surge in illegal crossings.

Perceived federal apathy toward the issue, moreover, has prompted a separate dispute with Texas over its own efforts to unilaterally secure the border.

Tobin is expected to leave the White House next week and her departure will mark the second White House exit announced this week. Michael Leach, the first White House diversity and inclusion officer, is expected to leave at the end of the month.
