Biden Cuts Beach Weekend Short As War Looms Between Iran, Israel

President Joe Biden cut short a weekend trip to his Delaware beach home to return to the White House where he will monitor events in the Middle East.

The White House announced Saturday that Biden would be leaving Rehoboth Beach a day earlier than planned in order to consult with his national security team.

The administration has been on high alert for a possible retaliatory attack from Iran or its proxies after an Israeli strike killed a senior Iranian officer at an embassy in Syria. White House officials did not say if something specific prompted Biden to change his travel plans.

U.S. officials have deemed the threat from Iran as real and viable. On Friday, Biden said he believed an attack could happen soon while urging Iran not to go forward with it.

Israel did not claim responsibility for the April 1 strike that killed Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, and six other officers as they attended a meeting in the Damascus embassy compound.

Earlier Saturday, commanders from Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard rappelled from a helicopter onto an Israeli-affiliated container ship near the Strait of Hormuz and seized the vessel.
