Assembly Member Mike Gipson has put forward a legislative proposal, designated as AB 3067, that could change the landscape of insurance applications in California.

The proposed bill mandates that insurance companies solicit information about firearms ownership and storage as part of homeowners’ or renters’ insurance processes.

Under the new bill, insurers would be required to annually submit data collated from these inquiries to the state’s Department of Insurance and legislators, albeit with stringent provisions to ensure individual privacy. The details in these reports would exclude any personal identifying information, a step to safeguard privacy concerns.

AB 3067 lays down a clear framework for the type of questions insurers need to integrate into their application forms. These inquiries are centered around whether firearms are present within homes, auxiliary buildings on the property, or vehicles and how they are stored.

“This legislative measure looks to bring firearms into the insurance equation, with specific directives for reporting while keeping personal details confidential,” elucidates the bill.

The controversial bill has yet to be assigned to a committee, where it will undergo further analysis and debate. If enacted, these regulations would come into effect starting on January 1, 2026 – a significant policy shift for the insurance industry and gun owners across the Golden State.
