Republican Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis enacted a new law on Monday that aims to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in higher education. The signing of Senate Bill 266 fulfills DeSantis’ earlier pledge in January to defund DEI programs on college campuses, after the bill received approval from state legislators on May 3.
Under the newly signed law, public colleges and universities in Florida will be prohibited from utilizing taxpayer funds for DEI programs.
During a press conference held at New College of Florida, Governor DeSantis explained that this legislation would refocus the institutions on their traditional mission, which entails treating individuals as unique entities rather than dividing them based on superficial characteristics. He further emphasized the intention to prioritize merit and accomplishments above affiliations with specific groups.
