Federal prosecutors have charged two men with using drones to drop contraband into the yards of seven state prisons throughout California.
The prosecutors, in Fresno, Calif., have announced the named the defendants as Jose Enrique Oropeza and David Ramirez Jr.
They are accused of using drones to drop loads of methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, tobacco and cellphones into the prison yards.
Oropeza and Ramirez also face charges of airspace violations, for allegedly operating unregistered aircraft and flying without a certificate, according to an indictment.
Several others have been charged in the case but have yet to be arrested.
“There’s a large problem right now with drone activity,” Sgt. Craig Parkhill testified at a recent trial in Los Angeles.
