Drones Smuggling Contraband Into California Prisons Now ‘Large Problem’

- Federal prosecutors have charged two men with using drones to drop contraband into the yards of seven state prisons throughout California.
- The prosecutors, in Fresno, Calif., have announced the named the defendants as Jose Enrique Oropeza and David Ramirez Jr.
- They are accused of using drones to drop loads of methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, tobacco and cellphones into the prison yards.
- Oropeza and Ramirez also face charges of airspace violations, for allegedly operating unregistered aircraft and flying without a certificate, according to an indictment.
- Several others have been charged in the case but have yet to be arrested.
- “There’s a large problem right now with drone activity,” Sgt. Craig Parkhill testified at a recent trial in Los Angeles.
