Dunkin’ Is Eliminating A Plant-Based Milk From Its Menus

Dunkin’ customers who were fans of the coconut milk option are in for a disappointment. The US chain has announced that it will no longer be offering the plant-based dairy alternative on its menus. This news comes less than three years after the milk was first added in June 2019.

When asked why coconut milk was being discontinued, Dunkin’ declined to give specifics. However, the chain did confirm that the move will affect its Coconut Refreshers lineup, which combines coconut milk and flavored iced tea to make colorful drinks. This product was only recently added to the menu in 2021.

Despite discontinuing coconut milk, Dunkin’ will still provide almond milk and oat milk as dairy-free creamers. Customers can also still order refreshers with a green tea base.

According to Technomic, a research firm, the reason for the change could be down to the cost of coconut milk. It is the most expensive nondairy option for restaurants, whereas almond milk is the cheapest. This cost difference most likely played a significant role in the decision to axe coconut milk.

Additionally, Technomic’s research suggests that coconut milk was not a popular choice among Dunkin’ drinkers. Only 1% of customers had tried coconut milk, while around 5% to 7% had added almond milk to their drinks, and 3% had opted for oat milk.

The discontinuation of coconut milk is not surprising, considering that restaurants frequently adjust their offerings if an item proves too expensive or is not selling. However, for coconut milk fans, this news is undoubtedly disappointing.
