Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York — a Republican and a figure noted for her close ties to former President Donald Trump — expressed her dissent regarding the certification of the 2020 Presidential election results. Her comments surfaced amid speculation about her potential candidacy as a vice presidential nominee for the 2024 elections.

During a CNN interview on Thursday, Stefanik reflected on the actions taken by former Vice President Mike Pence on Jan. 6, 2021. Contrasting her stance with Pence’s, she remarked, “I would not have done what Mike Pence did. I don’t think that was the right approach.” This explicit disapproval is a reiteration of her previously stated position on the House floor.

Rep. Stefanik was among those who voted against the certification of the election results, citing concerns over “unconstitutional overreach” in specific states, notably Pennsylvania. Despite these claims, Stefanik did cast a vote to certify the election results from Arizona.

Emphasizing her commitment to constitutional values, Stefanik stated, “It’s very important that we continue to stand up for the Constitution and have legal and secure elections,” casting doubt on the election’s integrity.

On the other side of the debate, Pence has consistently defended his decision to certify the 2020 election results. Following the tumultuous events at the Capitol on Jan. 6, he reflected on his actions as fulfilling his constitutional obligations. In an interview with ABC News, he stated, “I know by God’s grace, we did our duty that day, to act out the express language of the Constitution of the United States.”

As discussions about Trump’s running mate for 2024 continue, both Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) are also considered potential contenders for the vice presidential slot.

Stefanik’s remarks highlight the underlying divisions within the Republican Party about the certification of the 2020 election.
