Energy Drinks Hold Key To Slow Aging?

In the realm of anti-aging strategies, well-known methods include consuming high-nutrient superfoods, using specially crafted facial serums, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with sufficient sleep and exercise. Surprisingly, a less conventional approach has emerged—drinking energy drinks.

A 2023 study published in the journal Science has identified taurine, an amino acid termed a “semiessential micronutrient,” found in energy drinks, as potentially contributing to an extended and healthier lifespan, based on research involving mice, worms, and monkeys. While the findings are currently limited to animal subjects, experts express confidence in taurine’s potential benefits for humans.

Taurine, commonly present in dark chicken, meat, dairy, and fish, plays a crucial role in cellular energy production. Mayo Clinic notes its involvement in processes such as aiding the body in bile acid processing and maintaining fluid, salts, and mineral balance. Notably, taurine is a frequently included supplement in energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster Energy.

Researchers observed a substantial decline in taurine levels—up to 80 percent—in mice, monkeys, and humans as they age. Vijay Yadav, co-author of the study and an assistant professor at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, mentioned ongoing efforts to understand the cause behind this significant decrease in older species.

Supplementing taurine in middle-aged mice and monkeys demonstrated positive effects on their health, akin to anti-aging benefits. The impact was more pronounced in mice, leading to improved bone density, muscle endurance, immune system function, and a healthier weight. In monkeys, benefits included enhanced blood sugar levels, bone density, and immune system function.

Mice with increased taurine intake exhibited a 10 percent longer lifespan, prompting researchers to estimate that this extension could equate to seven or eight years in humans. While conventional anti-aging treatments like chemical peels and laser procedures focus on rejuvenating the skin, taurine operates differently. According to Yadav, it acts as a means of “hitting the brakes on aging” rather than reversing the aging process, as highlighted in a news briefing reported by NBC News.
