In a tragic series of events that unfolded on Monday night, Mike Gill, a former official from the Trump administration, was critically wounded in an incident of violence that rocked the greater DC area. Authorities are now piecing together the details of what appears to be a crime spree involving multiple carjackings.

Mike Gill, who once held the position of chief operating officer at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, was shot by an individual suspected to be behind several other violent offenses in the region. As of Tuesday night, Gill remained hospitalized with critical injuries, his family reported to Fox5 Washington DC.

The violence did not stop with Gill, as another person was lethally shot and their vehicle commandeered by the assailant. Law enforcement believes that the same aggressor perpetrated at least three additional carjacking attempts, including two separate altercations where they discharged firearms at the police.

The crime wave concluded when the suspect, yet to be publicly identified, was fatally shot by law enforcement officers in Maryland after threatening them with two guns. Gill’s encounter with the shooter occurred approximately at 5:45 p.m. on Monday as he sat in his parked car on K Street NW, where he suffered a gunshot wound to his head. Police are investigating whether the incident was an attempt at car robbery.

Senior Vice President for Capital Markets at the Housing Policy Council, and former Republican representative on the DC Board of Elections, Gill was reportedly picking up his wife from work when he was shot, the Washington Post noted.

An eyewitness, Yolanda Douglas, described to the Post the distressing sight of Gill injured on the ground next to his vehicle, partially seated in the car with his hand resting on the open car door, bleeding from his head injury. The witness also recounted the heartbreaking moment when a woman—later identified as Gill’s spouse—exited a nearby building, exclaiming in horror upon recognizing her husband, and running over to hold his hand.
