Friday News Dump: Whitmer Admits Michigan Needs Nuclear Power

  • Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, facing a stiff re-election challenge in November, sent a Sept. 9 letter to the Department of Energy supporting the reopening of Palisades Nuclear Facility in southwest Michigan.
  • Whitmer: “Keeping Palisades open will keep energy costs low, shore up domestic energy production, and increase Michigan’s competitiveness for future economic development.”
  • The Palisades plant shut down May 20 when its fuel supply expired. Whitmer said the state needs the plan for “reliable energy production.”
