Starting from January 1st, several new laws are being implemented across the United States. A revised law in Illinois that prohibits law enforcement officers from pulling over motorists who have objects, such as air fresheners or dice, hanging from their rearview mirror is one such law.

The original law was primarily added to improve road safety; however, it was seen by some as an excuse for pulling over drivers. The new windshield law in Illinois still prohibits objects that obstruct a driver’s view, but police cannot conduct stops or searches based solely on suspected violations.

With this new law, Illinois aims to send a message to its citizens that racial profiling or other forms of discrimination will not be tolerated. Democratic State Senator Christopher Belt, who sponsored the bill, told the Associated Press, “With this new law, we are sending a powerful message that the state does not tolerate racial profiling or other forms of discrimination.”

The revised windshield law is not the only law being implemented in Illinois from January 1st. The state also seeks to reduce distracted driving by prohibiting drivers from participating in video conferences or scanning social media while driving. This law is aimed at cutting modern forms of distracted driving, ensuring drivers keep their attention on the road.

Illinois is just one of the states implementing changes in their laws this 2021. Many other laws are being implemented throughout the US, with some being seen as pedestrian, while others touch on controversial issues. Laws that restrict weapons and medical treatments for transgender people are among the controversial laws being implemented.

Overall, these new laws are aimed at ensuring the safety and protection of the citizens, while simultaneously sending a message of zero-tolerance of discrimination practices in all forms. Citizens have been advised to heed these laws and ensure they do their part in keeping themselves and others safe while on the road.
