Mexican officials announced that the country would not accept immigrants deported by Texas “under any circumstances.”
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court cleared Texas to enforce a law that would allow it to arrest illegal immigrants on state, rather than federal, charges and deport them. The law calls for deported immigrants to be sent to ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border, but the Mexican government announced that it would not accept immigrants deported by Texas.
“Mexico rejects any measure that allows state or local authorities to handle immigration control, detain or return nationals or foreigners to Mexican territory,” Mexico’s foreign affairs ministry said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press.
The Mexican government argued that the law would criminalize immigrants and lead to the separation of families. It added that it would put its position before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, where the law is headed for further consideration.
Its brief is meant “to provide information on the impact that this law will have on the Mexican and/or Mexican-American community, and its effect on the relations between Mexico and the United States.” The country does not have to accept deportees unless they are Mexican citizens, according to the outlet.
The Mexican government has grown increasingly belligerent toward the United States in its rhetoric in recent years as the border crisis reaches new heights.
