In Reelection Bid, Poll Show 3 Of 5 Voters Disapprove Of Mayor’s Effort

First-term Chicago Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot is in essentially a three-way tie for first place with the election just three weeks away, according to a recent Chicago Sun-Times poll, but voter responses in the poll show she might not even get to a runoff.

  • The other two candidates tied for the lead are Democrat Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia and former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas.
  • The Sun-Times polls was done in conjunction with WBEZ , Telemundo Chicago and NBC5. The poll also shows more than half of those polled have an unfavorable opinion of aLightfoot, and 71% think the city is on the wrong track.
  • Crime, particularly violent crime, has been a problem in the city. Chicago last year had 695, though down 14% from 2021, according to the Chicago Police Department.
