- Earlier this month, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested by the morality police in Tehran for “unsuitable attire” and died in police custody, prompting widespread protests across Iran.
- In nearly two weeks of demonstrations, at least 83 people – including children – have been killed.
- The authorities have imposed a fierce crackdown on the demonstrations and arrested many of the “rioters,” but activists continue to take to the streets in the first significant show of opposition to the regime in three years.
