Kevin McCarthy Wins Republican Nomination For House Speaker

McCarthy was opposed by 31 GOP votes, but still won his party's nomination following a brief challenge.

  • Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona also sought the speaker position but fell in the final vote of 188-31.
  • “Losing 31 means he is in serious danger of not having the votes in January which would mean he’d need to drop out either that day or he could decide to before,” said a senior aide to GOP leadership, according to Fox News. “At that point, others would pounce.”
  • McCarthy will need at least 218 votes in January among the 435-member House to officially return as Speaker of the House.
