The owner of a small Shih Tzu shot a Rottweiler to death Sunday afternoon at a Reno park as the two dogs were fighting, officials said.

Washoe County sheriff’s deputies and Reno police responded to a call just after 1 p.m. Sunday at Rancho San Rafael Park’s off-leash dog area. Three animal services officers were called to assist.

The Shih Tzu, which was not on a leash, approached a leashed Rottweiler that was being walked by its owner and the two dogs started to fight, animal services said in a news release.

“The owner of the Shih Tzu reports that he attempted to break up the fight and was bitten by the other dog in the process,” animal services said. “The owner of the Shih Tzu shot the Rottweiler four times with a Glock 26.”

The Rottweiler was dead by the time animal services officers arrived, officials said. The Shih Tzu was injured but “appears to be stable” as of Monday, according to the news release.

The sheriff’s office said it took an incident report and determined no crime had occurred.

“While county code does prohibit the discharge of any weapon in a county park, there is an exception to any person lawfully discharging a firearm in protection of life or property,” a spokesperson said.
