The NFL wildcard game Saturday night between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs, in Missouri, was the fourth-coldest in league history.

The Chief took control of the game in the second half, which allowed several other storylines to emerge.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shattered his helmet on a hit from Miami safety DeShon Elliott during the game.

The hit occurred as Mahomes was scrambling for a first down, resulting in a clash of helmets that sent a shard of red plastic flying.

The temperature at kickoff was minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of minus-27.

The cold temperature may have made the shell of Mahomes’ helmet more brittle than usual, which contributed to its breakage during the hit. As a result of the incident, Mahomes had fist-sized chunk missing from the outer layer of his helmet just above his left eye.

The games at Arrowhead Stadium also focused several times on the icicles pellets on Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s mustache.
