Major Winter Storm Brewing With Snow, Ice To Blast Northeast

Winter is coming, and it’s bringing a massive snowstorm with it! According to AccuWeather, millions in the Northeast are about to experience their first widespread significant winter storm of the season, and maybe even years.

This cross-country storm will bring rain and snow to the West Coast midweek before intensifying in the eastern U.S. late in the week, dishing out a major storm just in time for the weekend. In fact, for many locations in the Interstate 95 corridor, this could be the biggest snowfall in two winters!

So, what can we expect from this winter wonderland? AccuWeather meteorologists anticipate major travel disruptions on the roads and at airports due to the wide variety of precipitation expected this weekend. Property owners, it’s time to brush off those snow shovels and snow blowers, and have ice-melting compounds ready. Even highway departments and townships may want to review their plans ahead of this massive storm.

Starting Thursday and Friday, the storm will begin to spread snow across the southern Rockies and into the southern Plains, before strengthening across the Southeast into early Saturday and tapping into moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. “The storm is expected to blossom across the Southeastern states to start the weekend, likely bringing along a swath of heavy rain and thunderstorms before pulling northward,” says Accuweather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham.

As the storm moves northeast, things are going to get interesting. It’s forecasted to collide with colder air in place across the Great Lakes and Northeast, allowing for a zone of snow to unfold. This snow is likely to expand rapidly once the storm’s moisture reaches the central and southern Appalachians, as well as parts of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England by late Saturday.

Prepare to transition quickly to deteriorating travel conditions along Interstates 64, 68, 70, 76, 79, 80, and 81. From dry to wet, slushy, and snow-covered, it’s going to be messy!
