Rubio: No Federal Funds For Michigan’s Ford EV Battery Plant

  • Michigan leaders promised $1 billion in taxpayer subsidies to Ford’s new electric vehicle plant in Marshall, Florida and now Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio is demanding an investigation into the agreement between the automaker and its contract with Chinese service provider and technology licensor CATL.
  • In a letter to U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Rubio called for an immediate Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States review of the licensing agreement between Ford and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited.
  • “[I]f Chinese companies like CATL are able to exploit both Chinese and United States incentives for battery and EV technology through clever corporate arrangements, then there is no use in investing federal funds toward industrial development in the first place,” Rubio said in the letter.
