Mexico Asylum Seekers Bypassing US For Canada

The surge in the number of Mexicans seeking asylum this year in Canada has surged largely because of the relative ease of obtaining asylum in that country compared trying in the United States.

  • The other factors for why more Mexicans are trying Canada is visa-free travel to that country and the threat of violence in their home country.
  • Over 8,000 Mexican nationals have reportedly sought refugee status so far this year in Canada.
  • The number is nearly five times more than last year and about roughly twice as many as in 2019, the last year before the COVID-19 pandemic and the related travel restrictions.
  • Most of the asylum seekers fly to Montreal, which has many direct flights to and from Mexico.
