NC GOP Boss Whatley Expected To Replace

Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) since 2017, has revealed her plans to step down after the upcoming South Carolina primary, sources say. The decision came to light on Tuesday during a briefing with senior GOP figures in North Carolina.

With McDaniel’s tenure drawing to a close, the spotlight turns to Michael Whatley—current Chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party (NCGOP) and general counsel for the RNC. Lauded by President Trump, Whatley is poised to take the helm of the national party.

McDaniel, gearing up for a graceful exit, has presided over the RNC through multiple election cycles, securing her position for a remarkable fourth term in January. In a recent conversation with Carolina Journal, she discussed strategic shifts within the RNC, including a push for Republicans to engage more actively with early voting—a campaign spearheaded in North Carolina by Whatley himself.

Under Whatley’s leadership since his initial election as NCGOP chair in 2019, the state has made significant strides in election security and Republican victories. A testament to his success, Whatley has twice been re-elected, in 2021 and 2023, reinforcing his reputation as a dedicated party strategist.

Susan Mills, the vice chair of NC Republican Party and a recognized ally of Whatley, expressed her support in an exclusive interview: “Ronna McDaniel’s service has been commendable and dedicated. I am wholeheartedly behind Michael Whatley becoming the next RNC chair.” Mills’ endorsement is significant, given her shared history with Whatley in orchestrating Republican wins across North Carolina.

“Mills confidently predicts the continuation of their triumphant streak in the upcoming presidential election, asserting, “Chairman Whatley’s leadership was integral to our victories here, including President Trump’s win in 2020, our control of the Supreme Court, and Ted Budd’s Senate election. We anticipate building upon these successes.”

Details regarding the transition of leadership within the RNC remain forthcoming. However, with high-profile endorsements and a proven track record, Whatley’s potential ascendancy signals a continuation of the party’s robust drive for electoral dominance.
