Former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley was called a name at a campaign event in New Hampshire. A 9-year-old boy named Adam raised his hand during the event and referred to Haley as “the new John Kerry.” The reference was a nod to Kerry’s change of opinion during his presidential campaign 20 years ago.
Adam asked Haley how she could change her opinion about Donald Trump in just eight years and if she would pardon him. Haley responded by saying that she’s telling the truth like she sees it and that it’s not personal for her. Pro-Trumpers think she doesn’t love Trump enough, and anti-Trumpers think she doesn’t hate him enough.
Haley commended Adam for attending the event, further emphasizing that it’s important to engage in political discourse at a young age. The boy’s question, however, echoed a common perception of Haley’s shifting views on Trump. Chris Christie has called Haley a flip-flopper on the topic.
Kerry serves as President Joe Biden’s special envoy on climate, but during his time as senator, he voted in favor of laws such as the Patriot Act, No Child Left Behind, and an $87 billion funding bill for American troops. Later, he campaigned against these policies.
Attendees at the campaign event laughed when Adam referred to Haley as “the new John Kerry.” The incident is yet another example of the divisive political climate in the US. As Haley prepares to campaign for the 2024 presidential election, her shifting views on Trump will likely continue to come under scrutiny from both sides of the political spectrum.
