Michigan’s presidential primary is Tuesday, with Democrat President Joe Biden and GOP candidate Donald Trump expected to win.

But the contest will be a big test to see how Biden navigates dissent within his party over his response to Israel’s war with Hamas, considering the state has a large Arab-American population that supports the Palestinians in the war. And Biden has vocally supported Israel since the Oct. 7 attack by Palestinian-backed Hamas against Israel.

The greater Detroit area is home to one of the largest, oldest and most diverse Arab-American communities in the United States and it

Top Biden administration officials have in recent days met with Arab-American and Muslim leaders in the state to try to mend ties with a community that has an important role in deciding whether Biden can hold on to a crucial swing state in the 2024 election.

Michigan’s large Arab-American and Muslim American populations turned out big for Biden in 2020, helping him win the state over Trump.

Trump is the  leading GOP presidential primary and is looking for another primary win that would add to his sweep of the early-balloting states.

The Michigan primary is the final major race before the election calendar broadens dramatically on Super Tuesday, March 5.

More than a dozen states will hold elections with thousands of delegates at stake on Super Tuesday.
