Hochul Signs Bill Changing ‘Inmate’ To ‘Incarcerated Person’

Democrat governor signed measure into law Monday

  • “For too long, we as a society have thought of incarcerated individuals as less than people,” said state Sen. Gustavo Rivera, a Bronx Democrat who cosponsored bill.
  • Critics argue Hochul’s priorities should be more about how shootings increased over 13% last month.
  • “Another ‘Woke’ Criminals 1st Law supported by our Governor instead of doing her job & protecting the public from rampant crime,” tweeted state GOP Sen. Jim Tedisco.
  • Criticism reportedly comes amid growing calls from Republicans, and some Democrats like NYC Mayor Eric Adams, for Hochul to have lawmakers return to state capital to overhaul  bail laws blamed for fueling rising crime.
