Incoming LA Mayor Nixes Outgoing One’s Plan To Light Up Hollywood Sign

The last executive order by outgoing Los Angles Mayor Gil Garcetti was to start a pilot program to put lights on the iconic "Hollywood" sign that overlooks the city, but new Mayor Karen Bass nixed the plan.

  • Garcetti’s order was for an 18-month pilot program.
  • Ten days after after Garcetti signed the order, the newly elected mayor canceling the plan before it took effect.
  • A Bass spokesperson said the mayor the canceled the program over concerns about its legality.
  • The idea of  illuminating the roughly 94-year-old sign has been contentious for decades, with nearby neighbors complaining about Garcetti’s order  soon after he signed it Dec. 11.
