Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is willing to vote to dismiss impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as long as time is given to debate the articles, he told Axios.
Why it matters: A bipartisan vote to quickly squash the articles of impeachment would be a clear indictment of the GOP’s historic impeachment, which has been years in the making.
What he’s saying: “I don’t believe there’s a constitutional standard met. But at the same time, I think the Senate should give a chance for debate, even if it’s limited to two hours,” Romney said.
- “So if there’s a motion just to table without any discussion, that’s something I would oppose. If there’s a provision that allows debate, it’s something I’d be open to.”
What we’re watching: The House is bringing over the articles of impeachment on Tuesday, beginning the official process in the Senate.
- Senate Democrats are expected to vote to quickly dismiss the articles on Wednesday.
