San Fran Catholic Archdiocese Declares Bankruptcy Amid Child Sex Abuse Suits

  • The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco on Monday filed for bankruptcy amid hundreds of lawsuits accusing the Catholic Church of enabling child sexual abuse.
  • The filing will allow the diocese to halt lawsuits while it works on a plan to reach settlements with “the innocent survivors who have been harmed,” Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said.
  • “The unfortunate reality is that the Archdiocese has neither the financial means nor the practical ability to litigate all of these abuse claims individually, and therefore, after much consideration, concluded that the bankruptcy process was the best solution for providing fair and equitable compensation,” he also said.
  • There are reportedly over 500 lawsuits.
