The feds are asking a Manhattan judge to delay the corruption trial against Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife for at least two months because of the spouse’s health.
Prosecutors wrote a letter to the judge overseeing the case Wednesday asking that the May 6 trial start be pushed back until July or August after Nadine Menendez’ lawyers filed papers about her serious health condition.
Nadine’s condition requires she undergoes surgery within four to six weeks, her lawyers said, adding she wouldn’t be in “physical or psychological condition” in seeking an indefinite delay.
Prosecutors said their office “takes seriously the unexpected medical development” and endorsed a few month pause for the Garden State Democrat to tend to his wife. But the feds opposed a hiatus for any extended period of time.
The Menendez’ are charged with 18 criminal counts related to an alleged sprawling bribery scheme in which they received gold bars and cash in exchange for favors that the pol doled out to his wealthy pals.
Menendez is also accused of acting as a foreign agent on behalf of the Egyptian government.
