With Less Gas Tax Revenue, States Consider Switching From Per Gallon To By The Mile

  • Oregon was the first U.S. state to charge motorists by the distance their vehicle travels instead of  the gas it burns.
  • The first-in-the-nation initiative is run by the state transportation department
  • Right now, only three states – Oregon, Utah and Virginia – are generating revenue from road usage charges.
  • “It’s probably a good thing, but on top of everybody else’s stress today, it’s just one more thing,” says Oregon resident and motorist Margaret Burroughs about her state’s pilot program.
