States Returning Food Stamps Benefits To Pre-Pandemic Levels

Thirty-two states are set in March to return food stamps benefits to pre-pandemic levels.

  • The cuts will impact over 30 million people enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as SNAP, in the 32 states, according to Agriculture Department data.
  • Among the states in which benefits will be returned to pre-COVID-19 levels is  California and Texas, which have greatest number of people on SNAP.
  • The reductions are due to the end of so-called emergency allotments, which increased food-stamp benefits at the start of the pandemic as Americans lost jobs and struggled with other aspects of the economy set back by the virus.
