- Mena Girgis, manager of Carlos Wireless in Madison, Tennessee, said that theft, harassment, and aggressive panhandling are hurting the local economy and intimidating customers.
- “They’ve been out there harassing people that are coming in the store or they’re going on the plaza,” Girgis said regarding the panhandlers and added, “Customers, they sit in the cars waiting for them to leave because they’re afraid to come in the stores, step out of the car. We’re losing customers that way.”
- Girgis has gone as far as to spread engine oil outside of the store to deter panhandlers from camping outside but did note that the police presence has improved in recent months.
